Cobh Wanderers 3 - 1 College Corinthians 'B' 22-04-2008
Munster Junior League Cobh Wanderers 3-1 College Corinthians ‘B’ 22-4-08 D. Maher, J. Brennan, S. Cournane
Heavy rain in the hours leading up to this game threatened to force a cancellation. Luckily the pitch held up and a season that seems to have gone on forever wasn’t extended even further.
As has been the norm since the start of the mid-week fixtures, a strong squad assembled for this Tuesday evening game compared to the shadow squad that had travelled to Mahon at the weekend. Paul Quigley decided to slum it with the juniors who have made him the player that he thinks he is. Ooch and Bull also returned from busy work schedules. All three were condemned to a place on the bench with Snickers Cronin and Statto O Connor keeping their positions in the team after sterling performances against Ringmahon. With James Broderick sick and Jimmy Hally deciding to retire at the top having become the oldest player to score in the history of football, John Brennan was restored to centre back and Bossie drafted in up front. The only other change saw the Kitten McCall return between the sticks in place of Taxi Tosh. McCall’s cameo appearance up front in Mahon was as uninspiring as his ‘best moments’ DVD and there was a large sigh of relief from the players to see him return to his best position (though some would say his best position is where he spent the rest of the Ringmahon game ).
As it turned out this game produced the three most unlikely ‘scorers’ since Kuyt, Tevez and Crouch visited a brothel last summer. Marza opened the scoring when he found himself free inside the box to meet a cross from the right. He made no mistake with a rare headed finish. With the usual chances going a begging it was only a matter of time before College equalized.
With the match looking like heading for another draw and two further points dropped Geasley lost patience with it all and decided to ring the changes. Oochie replaced Will O Hanlon, Shane Cournane came in for Jason McGroarty and Quigley allowed Bossie get a well-deserved rest having tired himself out during the first hour of the game trying to impress a special female spectator. We all love you too Bossie ‘cause you’re our best player and you have a great left foot and you score great goals and you’re just very special’.
With three subs on and six positional changes the College players seemed to get totally confused. Brennan forced the ball over the line from close range with a trademark header to put Wanderers 2-1 up. The final goal came from a low ball drilled across the six yard box to be met with a fierce strike from Bull who should have been in the right-full position. Celebrations followed suitable for an occasion as rare as the Bull scoring….almost as rare as the Bull turning up.
There was just time for the Kitten to make a ‘for the t.v. cameras ‘ save…one for the DVD. Was it worth missing the first half of the ‘Pool and Chelsea?? Doubt it!
