CORK EXAMINER, MONDAY, MAY 7, 1934
COVE WANDERERS BEATEN IN DUBLIN
Free State Junior Cup Final
B. & I. A. S.C. 2 Cove Wanderers 1

At Dalymount Park, yesterday,B.& I.A.S.C. beat Cove Wanderers by 2 goals to one.B.& I were a heavier team than Cove and their forwards worked better together than the Wanderers front line, and these two facts combined were responsible for Cove's defeat.A high wind made control difficult; otherwise more goals would have been scored,as the ball was frequently swept out of the field of play when normally it would have remained in.Cove Wanderers were under severe pressure through the first half, when B. & I.had the wind behind them, and Murphy in goal made manty fine saves.Hennessey's weight was a great asset and he was rather the better of the two full -backs,whilst Cotter was outstanding in the half-back line. The forwards,as already mentioned, lacked cohesion.B.& I. confirmed the good impression they had made by winning the Leinster Junior Cup and the Leinster Second Division Championship earlier in the season, and their forwards certainly were a clever lot.Lynch at right-back was the most dangerous man on the field, and he well merited the two goals he scored.Hellier at centre half kept a very close watch on Dick Barry, the Junior international, whilst Mulhall, the Free State junior international goalkeeper, made no mistakes between the posts.

The Play
Cove Wanderers began against the wind and they were lucky shortly after the start when Ryan delayed over his shot with Murphy more or less at his mercy.Aided to a great extent by the wind ,B.& I.kept play at Wanderers end,and Cotter got through a lot of fine defensive play. After eighteen minutes Thompson beat Rassmussen before sending in a pass along the ground which Lynch netted with a curling shot.Cove Wanderers were under severe pressure at this stage and Murphy made many fine clearances, but following one of these Bradshaw got possession and swung the ball across the goalmouth for Lynch to secure his second goal by heading it into the net.
In a sudden raid by Cove Wanderers Hannon sent in a great shot from far out on the right, the ball hitting the crossbar and rebounding out straight in front of goal, where three Cove forwards were unable to get possession of it,and a good chance was lost.
On the re-start Doyle made a great run before putting McCarthy in possession, but the latters cross was sent wide by Lawton.B.& I.made more headway against the wind than Cove had done, and Murphy was called on to clear from Ryan on the left. B.&I. continued to have rather the better of the exchanges, but following a foul against Barry just outside the penalty area,Walker scored for Cove with a magnificent shot which skimmed into the net a couple of inches beneath the cross bar.Shortly after this goal Barry was injured and had to go off,but he returned later after he received attention.Cove made strenuous efforts to get the equaliser but they were unable to beat the B.& I. Defence,in which Rooney at right-back was prominent.
